This afternoon I got to see Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Claudio Reyna, and (most importantly) Thierry Henry play pick-up soccer with a few other pro athlete friends of Steve. 50-yard line, first row. It was a good day.

Henry with his patented smile. What this guy can do with a soccer ball is amazing. But I'm still a little peeved that he lost me $200 in World Cup 06. And that he moved to Barca.

Jason Kidd, though fit, is looking old. But he'll still kick your ass.

Steve Nash is a very sweaty man. And I take back what I said about him looking like a poor man's Tom Cruise. He looks nothing like him. It was Steve's foundation (www.stevenash.org) that sponsored the event. Way to go, Steve!

(It's the one song in Journey's catalog where you can most clearly hear the Sam Cooke mannerisms in Steve Perry's delivery, and [Arnel] Pineda nailed it — an Asian guy imitating a white Californian imitating a black guy from Chicago, on a stage in a Las Vegas hotel with "Hollywood" in the name. The mind reels).

Alex Pappademas on Arnel Pineda, Journey's new lead singer, a 41-year-old Filipino that Journey's lead guitarist found on YouTube. (GQ June 2008, "He Didn't Stop Believin'") See Arnel's first concert with the band. The guy sounds surprisingly good!

I'm usually wary of sports figures and celebrities being too ostentatious about their Christian faith (i.e., "Touchdown Jesus"). Sometimes it comes across more as superstition that true conviction. At other times, to take a twist on Hamlet's Queen: they doth profess too much, methinks. [Insert disclaimer about how I shouldn't be judging, but I'm both sinful and an ass, and I need the same grace extended to me that I should be extending to them.] However, a few people, though not perfect, have stood out as being genuine role models. A.C. Green is one. Overshadowed by Magic and Kareem and Worthy for much of his career, he nonetheless was a great contributor (six-year rebound leader for the Lakers) that received a disproportionally small portion of the limelight.

In the world of soccer I have a growing admiration for Kaka, the 26-year-old Brazilian superstar who publicly says he may become a minister after he retires from the game. Though he, like many athletes, points to the sky to celebrate a goal (what I take to be a hackneyed gesture with a flimsy theological basis if any), his work with Athletes for Christ, UN's World Food Programme, and his public t-shirt proclamations of Jesus speaks much more about a faith that leads him to promote a different kind of "baller lifestyle", that there's something better than what this world has to offer, something more important that we are called to do and be.

My cynical side makes me hesitate to profess such spiritual man-crushes on public figures for fear of the all too common public failure later in their career, but in a small corner of my crusty old heart I still hold out hope that these heroes will be better than the rest. Even though the basis of my faith is that we all need a whole s***load of grace for all the s*** we've done, still do, and will do in the future, it's still nice to see someone on our team win in the public eye.
